Statment problem:
A merchant had 25 bottles of water. He sold 14 of them, how much bottles left....
Most of the people would do the operation 25-14=11 and would find the correct answer.
Here we rather have the following reasoning:
Double the number that has to be taken away, that to say 14+14=28
Compare this number to the one from the biginning (25 bottles) to see the difference, here 3
Remembering the number 3 throughout the rest of the operations,
taking away the number of sold bottles to the doubled number (28-14), getting a result of 14 and taking away the famous 3 to this intermediate result... Ending with 11 bottles, easy, no?!?!??!
This is what we have been facing for a long time, but that we understand today and therefore we can better go along with... I still need regularly to read again in order to keep in mind this way of thinking and to play cool in front of what seems, to me (and me only), something over complicated...
