Normandie et Histoire... Normandy and History
I have hard time trying to catch up here and with my visit at your places and I have many things to tell you about... The first stop of our vacations was in Normandy... To tell you a bit about the background, we went there because our son have been asking for it over and over. He is passionate about History and wanted to set foot on the landing beaches.
We arrived in Normandy, in a small village called Crépn, perfectly located as it is in the middle between Utah Beach and Sword Beach. The first day we went to Caen Memorial. Here is well explained all the political context before the second world war and why this was inevitable. I have found some part quite hard and I had to stop my visit at one put to be able to get over all the emotions. Some videos are "forbidden" for children under 12 or 16 and it is for a good reason.
We went then to the American cemetery of Colleville sur Mer. 11.000 soldiers rest here... Most of them were very young... Here again some emotions, as groups of veterans were there to pay tribute to their friends, family... We also went on the beach, Omaha Beach. Everywhere we went, the nature is still wearing the scares of this conflict... Close to the cemetery of Colleville, there is a lovely museum, especailly for the children: Overlord Museum. Loads of tanks, jeeps, motobikes, uniforms... We went then a bit further to the east coast: Arromanche les Bains and Juno Beach. I will not make here a History class to explain you the astonishing feat of the men who created the artifical harbor of Arromanche. Where hunderds of thousands of men landed as well as hunders of thousands of material.
All this in one day... It was intensiv and long, but it was time for us to get back to the hotel.
